Our Values
Please note: Portions of the Unitarian Universalist Principles are excerpted here in “quotes.”
- UUJME is guided by UU Principles, including the proposed UU Eighth Principle, as well as international law, UN resolutions, respect for human rights and religious freedom, UU actions and statements.
- We uphold the “inherent worth and dignity of every person,” and seek to “dismantle racism and other oppressions,” including anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Jewish, anti-Indigenous, anti-Black, and anti-Palestinian bigotry.
- We endeavor to be “a diverse multicultural Beloved Community,” reflecting the diversity of perspectives within the UU community, including generational, gender, sexual, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic diversity.
- We uphold the value of freedom and “right of conscience,” including the First Amendment right of any American to choose to boycott any company, institution, or nation.
- We uphold the value of “the democratic process,” asserting the right of all peoples, including Palestinians, to participate fully in any government under which they exist.
- We uphold the “right to a free and responsible search for truth and meaning,” including rejecting any conflation of criticism of the policies and actions of Israel with antisemitism.
- We heed a call to work for world community with “peace, liberty, and justice for all,” recognizing the special obligation of U.S. citizens to inform ourselves about the injustices in Palestine-Israel because of our government’s virtually unconditional military, economic, and diplomatic support for Israel.
